Keeping in mind Seneca’s sentence – IGNORANTI QUEM PORTUM PETAT, NULLUS SUUS VENTUS EST [“He who does not know to what port he wants to go, never finds a favorable wind”] (Seneca, Letters, 71, 3) in “emblematic” connection with the female personification of Air, represented in the central tile panel of the upper gallery of the cloister of the Cathedral of Porto (work attributed to António Vital Rifarto), the city of Porto hosts the 13th International Congress of the Spanish Emblematic Society.
Under the auspices of “better winds” leading to this safe harbor, the scientific community is invited to present innovative proposals in the scope of verb-visual culture and emblematic culture in particular, from a broad and multidisciplinary perspective. In the support of this holistic vision, we intend to promote new lines of reflection around image and emblem studies extensive to the Portuguese reality, proposing an equally wide range of thematic lines:
– Theories and practices of emblematic forms: Andrea Alciato and the tradition of emblems; emblematic strategies of relating texts and images; particularities of national and local emblems…
– Relations between emblematics and other symbolic forms: companies, hieroglyphics, allegories, heraldry, historical mottoes, sigillography, medals and numismatics…
– Classical, biblical, medieval and contemporary themes, topics/types and sources from the emblematic tradition and visual culture;
– Emblematic, hermetic and alchemical;
– Relations between emblematics and other forms of artistic expression: festive relations, architectural spaces, sculpture, painting, decorative arts…
– Relations between emblematic and literature; the subgenres of emblematic and related works: allegorical literature, bestiaries, books of fables…
– Emblematic and press. The production and reception of emblem books: authors, editors, printers, engravers, translators and commentators, editorial fortune…
– The uses of iconography: iconography of power, urban iconography, Masonic iconography…
– Iconography, emblematics and devotion;
– The present of emblematic and visual culture: photography, advertising, films, comics, performances…
– Emblem books / visual repertories and digital humanities: digitization, databases, web places…
– Presentation of projects, doctoral theses, and ongoing research on visual culture and emblematics;
– Analog /digital edition of emblem books.
