Open Poem - Short Lyric

CITCEM and the Department of German Studies of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto announce the “Open Poem” meeting, which aims to bring together not only researchers, but also students from all cycles of studies in the area of Literary Studies. Inspired by Umberto Eco’s “The Open Work”, we seek to challenge – or rather not challenge – the idea of the constantly open plurality of meaning in texts, this time applying the principle to the lyric, in particular those of short dimensions. To this end, the meeting proposes an approach to lyrical analysis, with each participant unfolding, exploring and revealing the layers of meaning contained in a single poem, composed of no more than 15 lines. We will therefore try to understand the extent to which the short lyric allows itself to be opened up, challenging the commonplace that brevity limits complexity. In this first edition, we placed no limits on the thematic lines – each participant was encouraged to choose a poem, regardless of its language of origin, period or style, and explore it from the perspective or methodology that best aligned with their research. The meeting will take place on January 29 and 30, 2024 at the Department of German Studies of the Faculty of Letters of the University of Porto and will be attended by 18 researchers.
