Biographical note

Associate Professor (Museology) at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Porto (FLUP), member of the Department of Heritage Sciences and Techniques (DCTP), Coordinator of the Research Group “Education and Societal Challenges” at CITCEM – Center for Transdisciplinary Research on Culture, Space and Memory at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto. After finishing a combined degree in History and Archaeology at the University of Coimbra (Portugal) I pursued my studies at the University of Leicester, UK (Museum Studies – M.A. 1991; PhD 2003 – Gulbenkian Foundation Grant; Praxis XXI Grant). Among other functions, I acted as Director of Studies for the MA (2003-13) and for the PhD (2013-2018) in Museology at FLUP where I have been teaching since 1994. I have participated in different research projects, edited, published and organized conferences and supervised more than 3 dozen Master’s Dissertations, 10 Doctoral Theses and 3 funded post-Doctoral projects on topics related to my interests, such as, museological narratives and discourses, professional identities in museums, museum mediation and education politics and practices, or the missions of museums in the contemporary world. I am currently involved in the R&D project EPITEC2 on “Heritage education and controversial topics” and the COST Network Slow Memory: Transformative Practices for Times of Uneven and Accelerating Change. Over the years I have served as a consultant for several museum / heritage projects and programs.

After finishing my degree in History, Archaeology variant at the University of Coimbra (Portugal) I continued my studies at the University of Leicester, UK (Museum Studies – M.A.1991; PhD 2003). Among other duties, I served as Director of the Master’s (2003-13) and PhD (2013-2018) in Museology at FLUP, where I have been teaching since 1994. I have participated in different research projects, edited, published and organized conferences, and oriented more than 3 dozen Master Dissertations, 10 PhD Theses and 3 post-doctoral funded projects (FCT 3 years; 6 years, FAPESP 1 year) on topics related to my interests, such as museum narratives and discourses, professional identities in museums, policies and practices of mediation and education in museums, or the missions of museums in the contemporary world. I am currently involved in the R&D projects EPITEC2 on “Heritage Education and Controversial Issues” and COST Network “Slow Memory: Transformative Practices for Times of Uneven and Accelerating Change”. Over the years, I have also served as a consultant to various museum projects and programs.
