Researcher Luís Silva is awarded the Religious Freedom Prize 2019
“Religious freedom in the context of war: the case of Portuguese Catholics in World War I” was the scientific research work, directed to the application of religious freedom in Portugal, that earned Luís Miguel Carvalho da Silva, a CITCEM researcher, the Religious Freedom Award 2019.
This year, the honor was once again awarded to research in the field of social history. Although the jury took into consideration the importance of promoting disciplinary and interdisciplinary diversity, it was in the area of social history that the research with the highest scientific quality stood out.
The prize was awarded unanimously, and the jury highlighted the cohesion in the structure of Luís Silva’s work, the good writing, consistency in the finishing and his contribution to deepening the knowledge of a pertinent theme, well framed in the problematic of religious freedom in Portugal. Also worthy of mention was the good state of the art of the research and the novelty achieved, which proposes new readings that open new horizons, especially in the problematic of religious freedom and the way this conditioned Catholicism, the majority and almost exclusive confession of the Portuguese at the time.
