Conference Cycle "From Famalicão to the World - And Europe so close to us! Celebrating 40 years of membership (1986-2026)"
Conference Cycle “From Famalicão to the World – And Europe so close to us! Celebrating 40 years of membership (1986-2026)”
The 40th anniversary of Portugal’s accession to the European Community is a privileged moment for critical reflection on European integration and the contemporary challenges facing the European Union. Despite the relevance of these themes in curricular documents and citizenship education, there is a need for teachers to be scientifically and pedagogically updated in areas such as migration, populism, demographic sustainability, climate change, geostrategy and European values. This action aims to respond to the need to strengthen teachers’ critical, interdisciplinary and contextualized knowledge, enabling them to take an informed pedagogical approach to European citizenship, cultural identity and global challenges, with a direct impact on teaching practice.
This cycle of conferences aims to disseminate and debate the European Union as a political, cultural and civilizational space in permanent construction, crossed by complex challenges that require an informed, critical and interdisciplinary reading. Research in the fields of social sciences, politics and education highlights the importance of continuous teacher training in promoting active democratic citizenship, especially in contexts marked by the rise of populism, migratory dynamics, climate change and profound demographic transformations.
Reflecting on the 40th anniversary of Portugal’s accession to the European Union allows us to understand the impact of European integration on the country’s economic, social, cultural and educational development, as well as Europe’s role as a global player. The action is anchored in up-to-date scientific contributions and experts of recognized merit, promoting the articulation between academic knowledge, European public policies and educational practices, in line with national and European curricular guidelines.
The Conference Cycle in a face-to-face format will take place in seven sessions, at the end of the day, with plenary sessions, thus seeking to promote a space for interdisciplinary and comparative sharing and reflection through debate on problems, approaches, methodologies and research practices, with a view to exchanges between researchers and teachers.
