EUROPEAN SYMPOSIUM Cultural Landscapes of the Vineyard: identities, challenges, opportunities. 20th anniversary of the classification of the Alto Douro Wine Region as World Heritage

Organization: CITCEM/FLUP, in collaboration with CETRAD/UTAD, CCDR-N/Missão do Douro, ICOMOS Portugal, UNESCO National Commission, Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e Porto, Association of Port Wine Companies, League of Friends of Alto Douro World Heritage, Douro Museum

The Symposium evoking the 20th anniversary of the classification of the Alto Douro Wine Region as a World Heritage Site is a space for the presentation of conferences and papers on studies and projects in the fields of history and geography, arts and literature, cultural heritage and environment, as well as for dialogue and sharing of experiences, strategies, methodologies and best practices in the management and enhancement of this heritage. Its reference context covers the fourteen cultural wine-growing landscapes recognized in Europe by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites between 1997 and 2015, located in seven countries: Austria, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Portugal and Switzerland, which proves the historical, cultural and natural importance of European viticulture. The classification, under several criteria, includes the historical-geographical “site”, traditional grape varieties characteristic of each region, and techniques of vine cultivation and wine production. Holders must prove that they are part of a setting of exceptional universal value and that wine production is a determining factor in the cultural and historical context of territories and populations. In addition to the history and geography of places and regions, the local identity, tradition-innovation, material and immaterial heritage, environment and historically and socially incorporated human work, traditional and technical-scientific techniques and knowledge of the culture of vines and wine, the uniqueness of vineyards and vineyards, the recognized quality of wines and the authenticity of terroirs.

In this context, this scientific and cultural event also aims to broaden and strengthen the network of contacts between institutional representatives, academics and researchers of the European wine regions with the UNESCO World Heritage label, to present and discuss lines of research and collaboration opportunities, and to contribute to identifying the relevant added value of this classification for the regions and populations involved.

The central theme of the Symposium focuses on the evidence, representations and symbolism of the “outstanding universal value” of Europe’s wine-growing cultural landscapes classified as World Heritage, in their diversity, uniqueness and affinities. The topics to be developed from different points of view, in the national and European panoramas, fall under the following thematic panels:

  • The construction of the landscape
  • Heritage and cultural development
  • Rurality and socio-economic development
  • Managing and safeguarding the classified landscape
