Memory, Citizenship and Freedom | Portuguese Cinema Cycle
The cinema cycle Memória, Cidadania e Liberdade (Memory, Citizenship, and Freedom), composed of 6 Portuguese films, is part of the months of April and May, which are days when we celebrate the historical memory that brought us, with the Carnation Revolution, freedom and the full exercise of a democratic citizenship.
The first film, May Revolution, will be shown symbolically on April 25th, although it is a work that takes us back to the memory of the Salazar dictatorship, which will be debated through the cinematographic narrative. From now on, every week on Fridays, with the exception of April 30th due to Casa Comum programming, we will start from cinematographic memory to analyze Portugal in the 20th and 21st centuries. All film screenings will be followed by debate and will be attended by guests of unquestionable competence and with a plural vision of the themes addressed.
The set of films allows multiple declinations on freedom and citizenship, starting from the recovery of the memory and imagery of the Estado Novo to the view of contemporary filmmakers on topics such as the fight for freedom, the underground, the role of women in the family and their status in society, the revolutionary process and social inequality. But above all, we will talk about Cinema and its unequaled capacity to read and show the signs of time and reveal the role of the National Archive of Moving Images (ANIM) of the Cinemateca Portuguesa.
