From the interview series “Pandemics and History in the Covid-19 Era“, this week we welcome Rodrigo Dominguez (U. Minho, CICS), who brings us the topic “Epidemics in and from Terra Brasilis: health and control between modern times and contemporaneity“. Rodrigo Dominguez is a researcher in economic history, with a particular focus on trade and political-financial institutions in the 18th and 19th centuries.
This interview takes us to colonial Brazil, where we will explore how the indigenous people were affected by European diseases, and what effects these epidemics had on the societies. We intend to answer questions such as: Which epidemiological outbreaks circulated between Portugal and colonial Brazil? What were these diseases? How were they treated by the local authorities? What social, economic, and even military consequences have they had? The interview will end with a reflection on the current situation in Brazil vis-à-vis Covid-19.
