{"id":25428,"date":"2026-07-31T14:21:32","date_gmt":"2026-07-31T14:21:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/citcem.org\/?p=25428"},"modified":"2026-07-31T14:22:09","modified_gmt":"2026-07-31T14:22:09","slug":"joana-ricarte","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citcem.org\/en\/joana-ricarte\/","title":{"rendered":"Joana Ricarte"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Joana Ricarte is a historian and political scientist who earned her Ph.D. in International Relations\u2014International Politics and Conflict Resolution in 2020 from the Faculty of Economics at the University of Coimbra.<\/p>\n<p>Since April 2026, she has been a member of the faculty of the Department of History and Political and International Studies at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto, where she is also a Research Fellow in the \u201cPeople, Markets, and Policies\u201d Group at CITCEM.<\/p>\n<p>An expert in peace studies, identities, and conflicts, her research is deeply interdisciplinary, situated at the intersection of international relations, history, cultural heritage studies and museology, and political psychology. Her research has sought to explain how the dynamics of identity, memory, power, and otherness impact protracted social conflicts at the domestic and international levels, and how these dynamics relate to the persistence of conflicts over time. More recently, his research has focused on issues of dehumanization, ontological insecurity, and everyday extremism, with a regional focus on the Middle East and Europe, seeking to understand the acceptance and rise of exclusionary and autocratic discourses and policies in these regions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Joana Ricarte is the author of the book *The Impact of Protracted Peace Processes on Identities in Conflict: the case of Israel and Palestine* (Palgrave Macmillan, 2023) and co-editor, along with Edmundo Balsem\u00e3o Pires and Cl\u00e1udio A. Carvalho, of the book <i>*Memory, Trauma, and Narratives of the Self: An Interdisciplinary Approach* ( <\/i>Edward Elgar, 2024); both works are published as open access. She has participated as a team member and in leadership roles in various nationally and internationally funded projects, having served as principal investigator on the <i>OppAttune <\/i> project <i>\u2014 Countering Oppositional Political Extremism through Attuned Dialogue: track, attune, limit ( <\/i>2023\u20132026), funded by the European Commission through the Horizon Europe program.<\/p>\n<p>She is currently the principal investigator for the <span lang=\"PT\">ArtPeace<\/span> project <span lang=\"PT\">: Investigating and Strengthening Grassroots Cultural and Creative Practices for Conflict Transformation in Europe and Beyond<\/span><span lang=\"PT\"><i> <\/i>(2026\u20132029), funded by the European Commission through the Horizon Europe program. <\/span> <\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Joana Ricarte is a historian and political scientist who earned her Ph.D. in International Relations\u2014International Politics and Conflict Resolution in 2020 from the Faculty of Economics at the University of Coimbra.
