Military units and civilian sectors mobilized in the city with support from some garrisons in the north of the country, in an attempt to overthrow the new regime and restore constitutional republican order. The rebellion was joined in Lisbon on the 7th, as Porto was surrendering, and in other towns; it was defeated after intense fighting and a harsh crackdown, which consolidated the regime and marked its political evolution. The February Uprising took on a character that was both military and popular, and marked the beginning of a series of insurrectionary initiatives generally associated with the concept of “reviralhismo.”

Affected by arrests, deportations, exile, and life in hiding, amid an environment of increasing control and surveillance, the opposition movement found the possibilities and limits of its actions profoundly constrained, experimenting with various forms of survival and reorganization both within and outside the country, devising strategies for resistance networks within informal groups across a wide range of sectors of national life, and seeking international support.

The study of this initial resistance to the dictatorship continues to raise new historiographical questions and to draw on new sources (recently accessible institutional archives and private archives); therefore, it is important not only to revisit the February Uprising on the occasion of its centennial, but also to rethink the topic within a broader chronology and a wider framework for analyzing resistance to the military dictatorship and the Estado Novo.

Similarly, it is important to encourage a broad, transnational reflection on the overarching theme of resistance to dictatorships in the context of the “short 20th century.” A comparative study of resistance movements helps us understand the similarities and specific characteristics of different authoritarian contexts. An analysis of the flows, influences, and exchanges among opposition movements—in Europe, the Atlantic region, and globally—opens up new avenues of research into the transnational history of the struggle against dictatorships.

The cultural and symbolic dimensions of resistance have also taken center stage in recent studies. Literature, the cultural press, the visual arts, theater, music, and education, among others, served as key spaces for resistance, the preservation of alternative memories, and the construction of political identities. These forms of cultural resistance helped preserve democratic prospects in contexts of prolonged repression and played a crucial role in the processes of political transition.

Building on the 1927 Uprising, this conference aims to bring together national and international researchers to discuss resistance to dictatorships, promoting comparative and interdisciplinary approaches: fostering transnational dialogue and dialogue between history (in the political, social, and cultural spheres) and political science, historical sociology, and military and memory studies.

Thematic Areas:

The 1927 Uprising: Key Players, Context, and Repercussions

Agency and Cultures of Resistance – Expanding the Theoretical, Documentary, and Methodological Framework

Underground activity, exile, transnational and overseas networks

Strategies and individuals (civilians, military personnel, women) – life trajectories

Periodicals and Public Opinion

Memories, Narratives, and Uses of the Past

Cultural Resistance and the Symbolic Dimension – Arts, Thought, Historiography, and Science

International Comparisons and the Global History of Resistance Movements

Place: Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto

Organization: CITCEM/FLUP (Center for Transdisciplinary Research on Culture, Space, and Memory)

Date: February 25 and 26, 2027

Registration: 50 €; Students: 25 €

Presentations: Portuguese , English, Spanish

Deadlines:

Proposals for presentations must be submitted by October 5, 2026, to congress.resistences.2027@gmail.com and must include:

Title of the presentation

Abstract (up to 300 words)

3 keywords

Brief biographical note (up to 150 words)

Institutional Affiliation and Contact Information

Notification of acceptance due by: October 30 , 2026

Registration deadline: November 20 , 2026 (for speakers)

Admission to the conference is free.

Organizing Committee:

Conceição Meireles Pereira

Sérgio Neto

Bruno Madeira

Daniel Soares Silva

Miguel Castro Brandão

[522
274

post-25374","eventos","type-eventos","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","ano-evento-2026-en","tipo-eventos-congress
["GET
