Title\/General theme of the session <\/strong>: Wine in Portugal: transdisciplinary research perspectives<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Session Summary:<\/strong> The first edition of the continuing education unit “Wine in Portugal – History, Culture and Society”, held in 2025, highlighted the current situation in Portugal.
\nthe potential for research into a subject as fertile as the history of wine and vineyards. Despite the historiographical efforts that have been made in recent years,
\nparticularly by researchers from CITCEM, the excellence of the work presented by the trainees in this course demonstrated new avenues of exploration, particularly
\noriginal, relevant and informative, designed from a transdisciplinary perspective, such as those presented in this workshop. Throughout history, wine production in Portugal has been a particularly important economic activity, both as part of the population’s subsistence farming and as an operation geared towards the national or international market. Its regional dynamism has defined the social structure and power relations between the various links in the wine industry, marked by great inequality in the distribution of profits from this lucrative business. Knowledge of the terroir<\/em>, vineyard cultivation and farming practices, as well as wine making and storage, have developed over the centuries at the intersection of consumer preferences, producing wines that are unique in the world. The different approaches and methodologies brought together in this workshop illustrate the multidimensionality of vines and wine as objects of study. Their
\nlink with health, its representation in institutional and media discourses, its role in shaping collective identities. It highlights the importance of knowledge – technical, economic and cultural – for understanding and valuing the vineyard, in a social and market context that is constantly changing and adapting. Traditional agricultural practices, with their landscape and heritage dimension, have evolved in the tension between preservation and modernization. Wine and vines are approached not only as products of human activity, but also as symbols of memory, territory, knowledge and belonging.<\/p>\n
