Prize for Studies in Sea Culture - Octávio Lixa Filgueiras
The jury of the 7th edition of the Octávio Lixa Filgueiras Prize for Studies in the Culture of the Sea, promoted by the Municipality of Ílhavo through the Ílhavo Maritime Museum, awarded the prize to the doctoral thesis “Vulnerability and resilience in coastal communities in northwest Portugal (late 16th century – mid-19th century)” (2025), by Ana Isabel Lopes, an FCT scholarship holder.
The handover took place during the 13th “Challenges of the Portuguese Sea” Seminar, dedicated to Women of the Sea, which marked National Sea Day on November 15, 2025, delivered by the mayor of Ílhavo, the director of the Maritime Museum and the representative of the family of the architect Octávio Lixa Filgueiras.
Ana Isabel Lopes is a researcher at CITCEM and has a PhD in History from FLUP. Her work focuses on the active relationship of coastal communities in northwest Portugal with the territory, analyzing the environmental challenges associated with coastal erosion. At the same time, he is carrying out research into forest dynamics and the exploitation of marine resources in this same coastal area between the 16th and 20th centuries.
