The National Commission for the Commemoration of the 900th Anniversary of the Founding of Portugal was established in July 2026 to coordinate the celebrations of the historic events that marked the formation and consolidation of Portugal as a political entity, including the Battle of São Mamede, in 1128, the Battle of Ourique in 1139, the Treaty of Zamora in 1143, and the recognition of Portugal as an independent kingdom through the papal bull *Manifestis Probatum* in 1179.
Professors Mário Jorge Barroca, associate dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Porto, and Luís Carlos Amaral, both researchers at CITCEM, were appointed to the National Commission for the Commemoration of the 900th Anniversary of the Founding of Portugal—the former by the President of the Republic and the latter by the Portuguese Academy of History.
