Famalicão receives Honorable Mention in the Local Government Award “Aristides de Sousa Mendes and other Portuguese Saviors – Holocaust, universal values, humanism and justice

Vila Nova de Famalicão’s educational and cultural program, “From Famalicão to the World: Contributions from Local History”, received the First Honorable Mention in the “Social and Community Cohesion” category. Awarded by the Directorate-General of Local Authorities, the distinction is part of the Local Government Award “Aristides de Sousa Mendes and other Portuguese Saviors – Holocaust, universal values, humanism and justice”, a national honorific award, non-pecuniary in nature, which takes place annually.

Part of the “Never Forget Project – National Program around the Memory of the Holocaust”, it is given to the municipalities that, on their own initiative or in conjunction with civil society, promote practices, programs or projects of high merit and public interest, in five categories: “Social and Community Cohesion”, “Arts, Heritage and other Cultural Domains”, “Shaping the Future on living memories and experiences”, “Differentiation, innovation, creativity” and “Making it Happen”.

“From Famalicão to the World: Contributions from Local History” is an educational and cultural program developed by the City of Famalicão since the 2018/2019 school year, under the Municipal Educational Strategic Plan. Focused on education for arts and heritage through the dynamization of educational activities to explore heritage and local history, this program has already addressed topics such as “Around the Memory of the Holocaust and Humanitarian Aid”, “Austrian Children of Caritas Portugal” or “Famalicans Prisoners in Concentration Camps”, in order to insert local history in a national and universal context.
