RiMS 2021 - Research in Medieval Studies: Urban Parish Communities in Medieval Europe, 1049-1545

The RiMS 2021 meeting invites submissions of unpublished and original research papers on the communities that were organized in the medieval urban parish, in a chronology established between the beginning of the so-called “Gregorian Reformation” and the beginning of the Council of Trent.

As a starting point for the studies to be developed, we suggest four axes of investigation, which should not be seen as distinct sections, but as plans of analysis to be crossed and articulated, whenever possible, in order to contribute to the understanding of that institutional, jurisdictional, and fiscal reality common to all Christendom – which was the parish – through the knowledge of the men and women who integrated it:

1) Secular and regular church communities in the center and orbit of the parish.

2) Urban families and lineages: strategies of social affirmation and memory preservation.

3) Urban socio-professional groups: association, representation and solidarities.

4) Foreigners, religious minorities and morally reprehensible professions: dynamics of integration and exclusion.

Interested researchers should submit their proposals (up to 500 words) and a resume (up to two pages) to rimsmeeting@gmail.com by April 30, 2021. The results will be announced by May 31, 2021.

The meeting will take place in Coimbra on December 2nd and 3rd, 2021. English will be the official language of presentation and discussion.

The participants’ manuscripts will be submitted to an anonymous scientific refereeing process, with two external evaluators, for subsequent publication in an indexed volume in Coimbra University Press.
