The 4th Marão Road Colloquium — Settlement and Transportation Routes Throughout History

COLLOQUIUM
Oct. 24–25 2026, Vila Real

The 4th Marão Road Colloquium — Settlement and Transportation Routes Throughout History will take place on October 24 and 25 at the Vila Real Municipal Library and will be streamed online via YouTube.

The main objective of this scientific and cultural conference is to promote knowledge, study, and the dissemination of the region’s history and territorial dynamics. The program combines historical accuracy with civic engagement, seeking to promote dialogue among researchers, cultural institutions, local governments, and citizens, and to foster a broad reflection on the region’s heritage identity.

Below, we highlight the key practical information for participation:

— Registration: Admission is free, but advance registration is required by October 18 using the form. The number of in-person registrations is limited by the auditorium’s capacity.

— Teacher Certification: The program on Saturday, the 24th, is accredited by the Training Center of the Northern Teachers’ Union (SPN) as a Short-Term Training Course (ACD) for teachers attending in person.

— Guided Tour: The tour titled “From Vila Real to Campeã: A Tour of Two Cobblestone Sections of the Old Via do Marão” (on the 25th) departs by bus from the Vila Real Municipal Library. Registration is limited to the bus’s capacity. We recommend wearing clothing and shoes suitable for hiking (difficulty level: easy to moderate).

The symposium is organized through a partnership between the Vila Real Municipal Library, the Polytechnic University of Bragança, the Center for Transdisciplinary Research on Culture, Space, and Memory (University of Porto), and the Campeã Parish Council. The initiative also brings together a diverse group of organizations committed to preserving the region’s heritage: the Vila Real City Council, the Super Bock Group, Dourogas, the Training Center of the Northern Teachers’ Union, the Casa de Mateus Foundation, and the Batuta Fidalga Cultural Association.
