Medieval Chronicle Session: "The Emperor's Dream and the (Re)Writing of History: Alfonso X and the Fecho del Imperio"

FLUP’s Chronicle Group is organizing a new meeting dedicated to the study of medieval chronicles. It will be led by Dr. Elena Caetano Álvarez, who will present a paper on the concept of imperium in the Estoria de España, the first great peninsular chronicle written in vernacular during the reign of Alfonso X of Castile and León (1252-1284). Through a detailed analysis of the adaptation of the sources used in this chronicle, the interaction between ideology and historiography will be discussed, in particular the way in which the political ambitions of this monarch, with aspirations to the crown of the Holy Roman Empire, influenced the discourse of this new historiographical model.

Elena Álvarez received her PhD in 2021 from the University of Birmingham, where she has been teaching ever since. The thesis he presented that year was awarded the Publishing Prize by the Association of Hispanists of Great Britain and Ireland, and his first monograph is currently in preparation. Her current research focuses largely on the influence that motherhood had on royal and imperial succession in Castile during the Middle Ages.

The session will be online and open to the public, with no prior registration required.
