MEMORIES OF RESISTANCE SHARED IN FREEDOM

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto and CITCEM set out to take part in the 2018 EUROPEAN HERITAGE DAYS, under the theme ‘Sharing Memories’, bringing to this school, and to the north of the country, a project that everyone wants, such as the National Museum of Resistance and Freedom, which is still little known among our students, the second generation that no longer has direct memory of what Portugal was like before democracy was regained.

The representation of the path and objectives of this project, its museographic program and architectural proposal, as well as the unique possibility of listening to and dialoguing with the members of CICAM – the Installation Commission, many of whom lived through the experience of repression and resistance, will be extremely enriching for students and teachers, and also for the community to which we are open, providing a participatory reflection on effective ways of transmitting memory.

Alongside this nationwide initiative, we also intend to publicize the project From Heroism to Firmness – a memory trail of the PIDE house in Porto (1930-1974) which, as part of the Military Museum, will pay homage to the anti-fascist resistance by identifying routes and spaces of repression used by the political police in this city.

The action will be part of a program focused on the difficult years of authoritarian regimes and resistance and the beginning of World War II, eight decades ago.
