THE STORY OF A PIONEERING VOYAGE BETWEEN PORTUGAL AND THE UNITED STATES:
Within the still little-known panorama of pioneering air travel between Portugal and the United States, this was the one that, as far as we know, had the greatest Portuguese contribution. All you need to know is that a Portuguese crew member took part. However, in terms of technical, logistical and even meteorological support, there were many other contributors who tried to ensure its success. All the more so because this was also a way of giving Portugal a major strategic role in the future framework of air links between southern Europe and North America. By presenting at FLUP a little of what happened then, in that already distant month of September 1931, we are trying to make known not only a series of exciting events that ended in tragedy, but, above all, to open up horizons for a segment of history that is still waiting to be explored, with the hope of awakening the interest of FLUP students in this subject.
