CITCEM researcher will participate in the Workshop on the Management and Administration of Digital Archaeological Data

Vera Moitinho de Almeida, CITCEM researcher, will participate in the Workshop Management and Administration of Digital Archaeological Data, with a lecture entitled “It takes two to tango. Using and reusing digital research data”.

The event, organized by the Archaeology Unit of the University of Minho, will take place on May 30th, at Edifício dos Congregados, Avenida Central nº 100, Braga. Program and registration available at: https://tinyurl.com/mxpdncy7

As part of a COST SEADDA action working group, this workshop seeks to bring together stakeholders and decision-makers from both technology and archaeology to develop common understandings around digital archaeological data management.

Archaeology has integrated digital technologies into its data collection and processing actions, taking advantage of ubiquitous computing. However, these digital resources may be irreversibly lost, not only because of the risk of media failure, but also because of the risk of obsolescence.

In addition to these data safeguarding issues, it is recognized that there is a lack of appropriate persistent repositories to allocate the data resulting from archaeological activity, a fact that promotes a lack of equity in their access, which hinders research on them.

In this context, the emerging challenge to facilitate knowledge creation through the combination and cross-referencing of data involves the adoption of best practices around the harmonization of data creation, preservation and dissemination processes, using repositories that make these data persistent and available in interoperable formats.
