Series of conferences "Neoliberalism and Austerity
The cycle of conferences Neoliberalism and Austerity is part of the work dynamic of the exploratory project Austerity as ideology, morality, and everyday life: Southern Europe in the Eurozone crisis (2010-2017) and aims to reflect on the origin, causes, and consequences of the financial crisis that first struck the United States of America and then spread to Europe, and especially to Portugal, Italy, Greece, and Spain. We will also try to think about the argumentation and moral discourse that legitimized the austerity measures imposed by the International Monetary Fund, the European Central Bank, the European Commission, and the governments of these four countries.
The first session of the “Neoliberalism and Austerity” colloquium cycle will take place on December 5th at 6pm online (https://videoconf-colibri.zoom.us/j/96243891415).
This first session will feature the participation of João Rodrigues (CES/FEUC) and Patrícia Alves de Matos (CRIA/ISCTE | FCSH), who will present, respectively, the papers “Para uma história da economia do presente: da desvalorização interna à austeridade real” (Towards a history of the economy of the present: from internal devaluation to real austerity) and “Moral economies of austerity: Common Sense, Popular Economies and Consensus in Portugal”.
