Archaeology in Border Spaces

Previous Note: Approved at the meeting of the Territories and Landscapes Group on July 9, 2021, the Late afternoon debates intend to be a space of approach and dialogue between all researchers of the T&P Group and all CITCEM researchers who want to join us. In an informal way and on a monthly or bimonthly basis, we will try to feed this space for debate, which is intended to be plural in themes, chronologies, and perspectives. Each session will host, within a common theme, two contributions from CITCEM researchers. This initiative is intended to contribute to a greater cohesion of the T&P Group and to an exchange of ideas among all its members. The first session, by the kind permission of Maria de Jesus Sanches and Joana Castro Teixeira, focuses on Rock Art. We are now accepting proposals for future editions that should be sent by email to mbarroca@letras.up.pt.

Part One: “Trás do Castelo, a hinge between two provinces
Tony Silvino (CITCEM and EVEHA) and Pedro Pereira (CITCEM)

The site of Trás do Castelo (Vale de Mir, Pegarinhos, Alijó) lies above the valley of the
Regato do Souto, in the extreme of what we now call the Alijó plain, in
border between the Roman provinces of Tarraconense and Lusitania.
The intervention carried out in Trás do Castelo allowed the identification of a
agricultural nature, under the Castro de Vale de Mir. Situated in a frontier location, but
also in passing, there is a noticeable socio-cultural and technical crossover in the
archaeological site, between the indigenous worlds of Proto-History and Romanization.

Part Two: “Between cliffs and the border: the Castro de São João”
Mónica Salgado (Miranda do Douro Municipality) and Pedro Pereira (CITCEM)

Situated on a steep hilltop on the cliffs of the Douro Valley, São João das
Arribas (Aldeia Nova, Miranda do Douro) is one of the most important archaeological sites in
paradigmatic of the Douro Cliffs.
Known to the scientific community for a long time and integrated in the first list of
sites classified as National Monuments in 1910, the Castro de São João
appears, at first glance, to be a remote and not very accessible place. Yours
location, exceptional, between the borders of Lusitania and Tarraconense, between
Portugal and Spain, allowed this site to flourish, as has been observed
throughout the research project started there.
