SYNOPSIS

Templars in Portugal. Men of Religion and War

Manuscrito Editora, Grupo Editorial Presença

November, 2019

The Order of the Temple did not have a long life. It existed for almost two hundred years (1119/20-1312), but curiosity about it and its knights has spanned centuries. Men of religion and warfare combined their prayer life with the military art, in particular defensive warfare with the purpose of protecting the holy places in the Holy Land and the pilgrims coming from the farthest European lands. Supported by the Pope and the main monarchies of the time, these knightly friars mostly gained respect and prestige and were rewarded for their military bravery with the granting of property and bounties that led to the Order’s growing power.
