Title/General theme of the session: Discourses and performativities: the profile and career of
Armando Luís de Carvalho Homem
Session Summary: Today’s times are constantly uncertain and unstable,
marked by a notorious permeability to the outbreak of wars and a disregard for international law. The press and social media don’t always present a
constructive contribution. Manipulated news is a reality: it confuses facts
historical with mere subjectivity (to paraphrase Adam Schaff, subjective truth
equates to falsehood), reflecting it through the deliberate dissemination of fake news.
In this context, historians have their say. However, it is not
It’s enough to state it as a programmatic principle. It is essential that this
intention. Society must create the essential mechanisms for historians to
can reflect freely and adequately on reality. Otherwise, we are
devalue their role and their importance, leaving them at the mercy of pressure and the
constant chains of events.
On the other hand, there are increasingly inorganic societies that question the weight and
importance of the state. Is this a critique of the promises of Modernity, which are not always realized? Of course. This being the case, it is essential to take a considered, circumscribed look at the situation, based on an exercise in historical and historiographical memory, so as not to let the collective memory fall into oblivion. There are various ways of carrying out this exercise of reflection on collective memory. One of these ways is through the study of individual paths.
The historiographical career of Armando Luís Gomes de Carvalho Homem is one such example. For 46 years he taught Medieval History at FL-UP, from which he retired in 2014 as Full Professor. Throughout this journey, his research produced significant results, which materialized in numerous publications, such as: O Desembargo Régio, Gama Barros, historiador das instituições administrativas, Diplomacy and bureaucracy in the late Middle Ages: a propósito de Lourenço Anes Fogaça, chanceler-mor (1374-1395), The Middle Ages in Portuguese Universities (1911-1987): legislation, teaching, research, O traje dos lentes: memória para a História das vestes dos universitários portugueses (séculos XIX e XX), Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto (1919-1931 and 1962 and ss.), Dionisius et Alfonsus, dei gratia reges et communis utilitatis gratia legiferi, among many others.
The purpose of these ICOs is to bring together various personalities with the aim of
study the multiple facets of the historiographical itinerary of Doctor Armando Luís de
Carvalho Homem. They all have in common the fact that they were his students and/or
students at various stages of their academic career (undergraduate and above all
master’s and doctoral degrees).
The approaches are not intended to be panegyrical. Quite the opposite. These are well-founded studies, articulated and supported by plural arguments around the following thematic axes: Medieval History and Historiography; Representations of the Middle Ages; The History of Historiography, especially of the FL-UP and UP; History of Historiography and the History and Historiography of Law
