“I have read and understood the privacy policy” is the most told lie on the Internet: the consent manager for access to personal data based on participatory design
Proponent: Jonas Ferrigolo Melo (Information, Communication and Digital Culture)
GENERAL SUMMARY
This multidisciplinary workshop addresses crucial questions about privacy and data protection in the digital age. From the perspective of Critical Information Theory and Intercultural Information Ethics, Camila Mattos da Costa, PhD in Information Science, will examine the impacts of data extractivism and digital colonialism on contemporary society. Next, the concept of participatory design applied to science and technology will be explored, highlighting the importance of involving users from the earliest stages of development to ensure more accessible, usable and transparent products. The focus will be on creating creative digital literacy and adapting to the growing demands of Internet users. Finally, the discussion will focus on informed, free and unambiguous consent as the cornerstone of privacy and data protection. Through participatory design techniques, participants will be challenged to assess the strengths and weaknesses of consent managers and to propose essential features for an ethically effective consent manager in relation to the processing of website users’ personal data. In the end, insights will be gained into the participants’ perception of an unambiguous consent manager. This workshop offers the opportunity to reflect on ethical, legal and practical issues related to privacy and data protection, while stimulating critical thinking and active participation by those involved.
